FOUR CHAMBERS RELEASES SUB LIMINAL,

PRESS RELEASE | A FILM ABOUT DESIRE AS A THRESHOLD

For immediate release — 11 September 2026

The studio releases its first new work in six months, exploring liminality and erotics of subliminal suggestion

Shot in a pitch-dark room punctuated by camera flash, SUB LIMINAL withholds as much as it shows. Forms emerge and vanish. Text appears for fractions of a second… long enough to register, not long enough to read … a device borrowed from the visual grammar of JOI and gooning* compilations, where language, image and instruction blur into suggestion.

The film takes as its subject the space between wanting and having. Drawing on Arnold van Gennep's 1909 formulation of rites of passage and Victor Turner's description of the liminal as "betwixt and between," it proposes that desire is itself a threshold state: the waiting room, the doorway, the moment before possession.

"Desire is the space between what we want and what we have," Ashley writes in the accompanying essay. "The desired thing is close enough to be imagined but still distant enough to remain the other. Desire requires this distance. It lives in this gap."

and ultimately: “The moment we actually get what we want, when our desires are fulfilled something changes. The corridor of possibility becomes a room and potential collapses down into fact, no longer liminal.”

Liminal spaces have a nebulous, tricky definition, much like pornography: “you know it when you see it.” (Jacobellis v. Ohio US. 184 1964) but they often seem to centre on environments of human architecture that are in-between places - be that passages, roads, waiting rooms, corridors. Not quite uninhabited; they are often contextless places of transition, deserted but still of human construction, a site where we move through from one fixed reality unto another.

The work also draws on Brion Gysin and Ian Sommerville's Dreamachine, the 1950s hypnotic flicker device Gysin called "the first art object to be seen with the eyes closed” and theoretically the film moves between Georges Bataille, for whom eroticism was a crisis of individuality and a movement toward continuity across the gulf between separate beings, and Jacques Lacan, for whom desire is bound to lack and can only ever be "represented as a reflection on a veil."

NOTES TO EDITORS

About Four Chambers

creative pornography project making short films with sex & cinema

From a background in analog photography, art school bullshit and digital sex online, Four Chambers is a project, an idea and an ongoing collaboration with the intention to explore the aesthetic and conceptual potential of pornography as a creative medium for ideas.

Headed by performer Vex Ashley and self taught in film making with an emphasis on collaborative DIY practices; Four Chambers now exists alongside a new wave of creators making contemporary pornographic work from a new perspective.

The project remains deliberately ambiguous, rejecting labels for both their films and performers, existing in- between genres of both art and pornography and dismissing the need for a definition of either. Exploring themes of technology, symbolism, mythology and alchemy and their intrinsic intersection with sex and part of the growing decentralisation from traditional adult industry business, Four Chambers is independent, DIY, conceptual, pornography cinema.

About Gooning

*Gooning is an internet slang term that refers to the act of masturbating for a prolonged period of time, often for hours or days, while consuming pornography without immediately trying to reach an orgasm.
