    "body": "<p>From Friday, England and Wales will criminalise possession of three kinds of pornography. The platforms have already gone further than the law - and social media is next. Independent porn producer and performer Vex Ashley is available for interview and comment.</p><p><strong>London, on 6 November 2026 &mdash;</strong> three new pornography offences under the Crime and Policing Act 2026 come into force in England and Wales. For the first time, possession - not just publication - is a crime. But the real story is not simply what the law now bans. We received the above from Ministry of Justice - Scotland and Northern Ireland retain their existing extreme-pornography laws. </p><p><strong>Self-censorship by proxy</strong></p><p>The law bans strangulation and the platforms are banning face-sitting.</p><p>On 28 October, the fetish clip site iWantClips told creators it will remove 17 categories from UK access before today &mdash; including content UK customers have already paid for &mdash; citing the new Act. But a platform facing liability under the Online Safety Act does not litigate the difference between a scene that depicts suffocation and a woman in jeans sitting on someone&rsquo;s face. It draws the line a long way back from the law and calls it compliance.</p><p>And it&#039;s always non-normative sex that goes first: kink, fetish, queer and trans bodies, anything a compliance team can&rsquo;t file under vanilla. This material that is not illegal becomes more and more unavailable. The removal is proof of the steady criminalisation of our sexual imaginations. Each new wave of regulation redraws the line around what adults are permitted to want, and the line always moves in the same direction - away from anything outside the heteronormative default, like PIV sex.</p><p><strong>The canary in the coal mine</strong></p><p>Porn is where this is tested first, but never where it stops.</p><p>Eight days ago, on 29 October, Ofcom published its shortlist of age-assurance methods for the UK&rsquo;s under-16 social media ban, due to take effect next year: photo-ID, matching bank checks, digital ID services and facial age estimation. All four require photo ID. Ofcom says &ldquo;many&rdquo; adults will go through the same checks. Big Brother Watch has called it a national ID system by the back door.</p><p>Sex workers and porn performers have lived under this: deplatforming without notice, payment processors as moral arbiters, verification that doubles as surveillance, and categories of their own bodies quietly deleted from the internet. What is happening to them now is often the rehearsal for what happens to everyone next year.</p><p><strong>What we can learn from </strong>indie <strong>pornographers and porn performers</strong></p><p>Vex Ashley is available for interview, comment and op-ed on the new offences, platform over-compliance, the social media ban and the future of sexual expression online.</p><p><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/vextape/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vex Ashley</a> head of Four Chambers says:</p><p><strong>&quot;The criminalising of our fantasies and imaginations feels like another step along the conveyor belt of puritanism to conservatism to fascism that no one feels prepared to fight because the public shame of defending sexual freedom (with all its complexities) is still so potent that we all just resign to politely slide together into authoritarianism. Sex is a vital part of our collective human existence and it deserves value and exploration, we&rsquo;re living through an age when we&rsquo;re watching unimaginable genocidal violence co-signed by our government unfold on our screens but we might go to prison for sitting on someone&rsquo;s face.&quot;</strong></p><p><strong>What&rsquo;s next</strong></p><p>Government regulations for the under-16 social media ban are expected by the end of 2026, with Ofcom guidance to follow and enforcement in 2027.</p><p>Further platform withdrawals are likely as hosts and processors read the new offences more conservatively than the courts will.</p><p><strong>About Four Chambers</strong></p><p><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/fourchambers/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Four Chambers</a> is a creative pornography project blending cinema and sexuality.
